The term “mixed media” can cover an enormous range of techniques. My mixed media paintings typically start on a canvas that I have collaged with bits of old pages torn from books and handmade papers.
I may cut the papers into specific shapes or just tear them. As I paint, I allow the underlying papers to show through in places. I may collage more paper as I work or splatter the piece with paint.
This image is a detail from a large mixed media painting of a snowy owl. For this piece I cut some of the collage pieces in the foreground and background into snowflakes.
